Sam Hafertepe Jr. – Best of Show at Missouri State Fair!

(Bill W) August 21, 2017 – Sam Hafertepe Jr. and the Keith Dobbs #15H team made the most of their visit to the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia on Sunday. The Sunnyvale, Texas native took home the $3,000 to win feature event, and extended his lead with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series. This weekend, the series hits Riverside International Speedway (“The Ditch”) on Thursday and Smoky Mountain Speedway near Maryville, Tennessee Saturday.

Sam started sixth in his heat at Sedalia. “We were able to jump up to third,” he says. “Knowing that there’s only three heat races, we knew we didn’t need much more than that. We were going to be in the redraw. There’s no sense in us trying to get more than what we go there.”

Car owner Keith Dobbs drew a starting spot outside row two for the main event. “Turns one and two had a pretty good cushion on it,” says Sam. “Eventually, it laid rubber down there just off the cushion. There wasn’t a cushion anywhere in three and four and it got really wide. We spent the first half of the race on the bottom down there.”

Aaron Reutzel would lead the first seven circuits before Sam would take control the rest of the way. “We started to make the top work at that point,” he says. “It started taking rubber in three and four as well by the end. It was good to get the win.”

Starting up front was important on Sunday. “Track position at any of these big tracks nowadays is a huge deal,” says Sam. “If you have a good car out front, it’s hard to get by them. We knew if we got out front or were running with the leader at least, we’d have a good opportunity to win the race.”

Sam and the team will put some miles on for this weekend’s doubleheader. “We’ve got some driving to do this weekend,” he says. “We’ve never been to Smoky Mountain Speedway, but we’ve always liked tackling new tracks.”
