Sam Hafertepe Jr. – Timber!

(Bill W) October 10, 2016 – Sam Hafertepe Jr. rebounded from a tough ending to the “Fall Brawl” at I-80 Speedway a week ago with a win at Timberline Speedway near Corley, Texas last Saturday night. The victory for the Sunnyvale, Texas native was sanctioned by the ASCS-Red River region. The Keith Dobbs #15H team will be competing this Friday and Saturday night at the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series Devil’s Bowl Winternationals in Mesquite, Texas.

Sam started third in his heat race Saturday. “It took us a couple of laps to get around the 88 (Scottie McDonald),” he says. “Once we were by him, it was pretty smooth sailing. We had a nice car in the heat. We had some good notes from last year when we were able to win there, so we used those. That proved to be good in the heat race.”

The draw also went his way when he drew the pole for the feature. “The track was really slick in the heat,” says Sam. “We really didn’t touch the car from the heat to the feature. We knew it was probably going to eventually take rubber. We kept the car about the same. At the beginning of the feature, the track was as slick as it had been all night. Finally, it took rubber with about ten to go.”

Sam says the rubber didn’t totally lock the bullring down. “It was patchy. It didn’t speed us up a whole bunch. It was enough to make it hard to pass in three and four towards the end, but one and two was still pretty wide racing.”

It was a good win for the team. “We’ve been running well; we just haven’t been getting the wins lately,” says Sam. “To be honest, we wanted to get a win after crashing last week. We wanted to check the car over and make sure everything is ready for Devil’s Bowl this weekend.”

Sam leads the ASCS series by 245 points heading into Devil’s Bowl, but he won’t be points’ racing. “We don’t go there expecting anything less than a win,” he says. “We’re always good there. We wanted to make sure we had our car ready for this weekend, and winning proved that we’ll be prepared.”
